In 2012, Chris Kluwe became one of the most outspoken supporters of same-sex marriage in Minnesota. That year, he also penned an infamous letter to Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns, Jr. defending Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo's support for same-sex marriage. In an award-winning 2012 cover story, we chronicled Kluwe's efforts to pry open the last closet in America: major league sports.
At the start of 2014, Kluwe went nuclear on Deadspin and caused an uproar by speaking out against Vikings coaching staff Leslie Frazier, Rick Spielman, and Mike Priefer. Kluwe wrote that Priefer said "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows" and exhibited other homophobic behavior.
