Despite being a sports bar called the Hole, the Hole Sports Lounge does a stand-up job in the food department. The crowd is equal parts students lingering over happy hour beers and families sharing pizzas and either watching a game on the big screen or waiting for the game to start next door at TCF Bank Stadium. The chef, Ian Pierce, has real credentials (20.21, 128 Cafe, and the Modern Cafe), and he adds little touches that elevate his dishes above standard bar food: homemade pickles with sandwiches, fresh-ground spices in the taco burger and pizza, and a lovely coconut and lemongrass coulis with the curry chicken satay. Don't skip the appetizers, especially the piquillo pepper poppers. Sandwiches are huge: Try the the braised pork shoulder and the fancied-up tuna melt. PHOTOS BY BENJAMIN CARTER GRIMES.
