Mosaic: The Tour

1 of 18

Like the art form that gives it its name, Mosaic, the new cafe with the colorful mural in Longfellow, uses lots of little things to create a satisfying whole. It's across the street from Harriet Brewing Company, which contributes to its decent beer list. It's got a cute-as-a-button patio. It specializes in frozen custard (a throwback to the site's previous tenant, the Glacier Cafe). And it serves a lot of really tasty food: solid sandwiches (try the brilliant take on a bahn mi, made with meatloaf), burgers made with Thousand Hills grass-fed beef, several standout vegetarian selections, and really, truly fabulous French fries. The fries are tossed in finely chopped rosemary and garlic - itself a pretty good idea - but the best part is they're baked in a special turbo oven rather than fried. A better-tasting and healthier fry? It's a small, tasty miracle. PHOTOS BY EMILY UTNE.
