A restaurant that features corn nuts and hot dogs as proudly and prominently as they do rillette and arancini, Lake & Irving, a new casual chef-driven Uptown eatery with plenty of Pacific Rim influence, is an intriguing mix of high-end and lowbrow elements. This eclectic menu accommodates the diverse surrounding neighborhood, providing a laid-back experience that is not without a few foodie frills. Try the mushroom fries, coated in a bubbly tempura-like batter that allows the mushroom to retain its texture and flavor and served with a pungent black garlic aioli. At brunch, opt for the chicken and waffles: a melt-in-your mouth Belgian waffle topped with a paillard of boneless, crispy-crusted, well-seasoned chicken, scattered with chopped chives and served with beer syrup, made with a reduction of Founder’s beer. Or if a more casual bite is what you seek, check out the $7.50 “D.C. Style” half-smoke, a beef chuck chili dog inspired by the classic from Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C. It's hard to go wrong with such a diversity of menu items in the offing. PHOTOS BY E. KATIE HOLM
