Lou Reed performed at the Orpheum Theatre on June 12, 2000. The legendary frontman of the Velvet Underground died at his home in Amagansett, New York on Sunday, October 27, 2013.
Memories from Lou Reed's performance at the Orpheum from City Pages photographer Steven Cohen:
Lou Reed is gone now. His influence is incalculable.
He visited the Orpheum in 2000 with guitarist Mike Rathke, bassist Fernando Saunders and drummer Tony "Thunder" Smith to support his album Ecstasy. The set was comprised mostly of songs from that album and 1996's Set The Twilight Reeling. Only during the encore did he break out older tunes, "Dime Store Mystery" from New York, the title track of The Blue Mask, Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane." The show ended with "Perfect Day" and "Vicious" from Transformer.
I had my Pentax K1000 with me up in the balcony and was able to snap a few photos of the legend at work. It was my first and only time seeing Lou Reed. Rest In Peace.
