Police investigate apparent homicide; gunman wounded

Police called to a Jimmy John's in Cottage Grove found a woman shot dead inside the restaurant and a wounded man in the parking lot who had apparently shot himself, according to news reports Thursday night.

The unidentified man was taken to Regions Hospital, where his condition is unknown.

An employee at a nearby Ruby Tuesday gave an account of what happened to the Star Tribune.

According to the woman, witnesses told her the victim ran out of an Anytime Fitness gym and into the Jimmy John's next door at 7750 Harkness Ave, being chased by a man who was shooting at her.

The woman was shot inside the restaurant, witnesses said, and the gunman apparently shot himself in the parking lot outside before police arrived.

[UPDATE: Police have identified the gunman as Chevel Richard, 22, and say he later died from his self-inflicted gunshots, according to news reports. The victim was identified as his wife, Tensia Richard.]
