Beer flights from MN Craft Brewers: Good idea or best idea?
Let's just get right to it, shall we? As this is the first weekend of the State Fair, there's really no other sensible place to do some outdoor beer drinking. But once inside the gates, it's easy to get overwhelmed with choices so here are a few of our favorite spots with beer gardens and a sampling of what's on tap.
Ball Park Cafe
on Underwood Street has all the big batch domestics (including Bud Light Staw-Ber-Rita, which was a dark horse for official beer of our 10,000 Sounds Festival
) but we're more excited about some of the interesting regional brews like Liftbridge Hop Dish IPA and Mini Donut, Harriet West Side IPA, Excelsior Bitterschaple, Badger Hill White IPA, Mankato Kolsch, 3rd St. Pumpkin Ale, and Indeed Daytripper which, coincidentally, also goes into the batter for their new-this-year craft beer onion rings.
Giggles Campfire Grill near the corner of Cooper St. and Lee Ave. has an impressive tap list with everything from gluten-free Omission to Brash's insanely titled Cold Ass Honky. There's also a few from Fulton, Flat Earth, Lucid, Brau Brothers, and Summit.
If you like a little education along with your suds, be sure to check out the MN Craft Brewers Guild booth in Agriculture Building for select craft beer flights and people who will happily get into the nitty-gritty science of brewing with you.
If you're sticking to this side of the Grandstand this weekend, there are still a handful of other beer-centric events going on around town. Borough's first-ever block party
is this Sunday starting at noon in the North Loop. The event features live music, a pig roast, and beer from 612Brew. Tickets are $25 in advance here
and a few will be sold at the door day-of for $30
More block party fun is going on Saturday in the parking lot of the old/new Travail
in Robbinsdale. Get a sneak peek at construction, sink your teeth into a pulled pork sandwich or some Travail-made dippin' dots, and sip beers from Surly starting at 2:00 p.m. Admission is just $2 and you can get more info on the event here
Steel Toe Brewing
is celebrating its second anniversary on Friday with $2 select pints and food from House of Hunger food truck.
Cajun 2 Geaux will be at Harriet Brewing
on Saturday for the fifth-annual LoLa Art Crawl. Woluptuweiss, a German-style Dunkleweizen is newly on tap and live music will be happening all day. More details available here.
Scratch Food Truck and AZ Canteen will be at Surly's taproom
on Friday and Saturday, respectively. If you planning on swinging by, remember to try the newly unveiled
Misanthrope Belgian-style saison.
