Owner Will Xiong inside the Vellee Deli truck
Remember those days when the summer sun would soak into your skin as you feasted curbside on a powerful bite of food from a food truck? The days when standing in line for a Currito -- Vellee Deli
's spicy Thai curry burrito -- was worth every moment of possible sunburn?
Yes, watching all our favorite food trucks, one by one, go into winter hibernation was a real downer, but we've gotten a spot of good news: Vellee Deli popping up inside a brick and mortar restaurant this winter and will stay there all winter long.
In January, Will Xiong and Joyce Truong are moving Vellee Deli inside the cozy confines of Crema Cafe. The duo have long been searching for a permanent home for those tasty banh mi and eggrolls, but nothing was quite the right fit.
The Crema Cafe partnership came to them, as Xiong said, "[By] pure fate. We were catering a wedding at Fulton Brewery and Crema was there serving dessert. I happened to peek over and saw that they made a Fulton Lonely Blonde ice cream so I had to try it. After a friendly introduction and 100 sample spoons of alcohol-infused ice cream, we really hit it off. A few months later, Joyce and I went back for more ice cream and during that visit we got to talking with Ron and Carrie and the pop-up idea was born."
The menu will be packed with all your favorites from the truck, but this time they'll have dessert as well. Said Xiong, "Crema Café will be offering their signature Sonny's ice cream and fresh fruit sorbets made the same way since 1945. Done right, made from scratch, the old school way." And if that isn't enough to get your taste buds moving, there will also be select local craft beers and wine available for the quaffing.
Vellee Deli will be operating in the space from January until the food truck season kicks up again in the spring. In that time, they will be putting their catering services on hold. However, the truck will be back out and available in early April 2014. (Anybody planning any big summer shindigs might want to get that space reserved soon, though, as their schedule is filling up fast.)
Just imagine one of those spicy tacos packed with tender pork, paired with a scoop of that ultra rich and dreamy ice cream, and washed down with a cold Fulton -- you can almost taste the sunshine.
