There is a general rule of thumb that has served us very well: If you see a long and winding queue for food, get in it. Hungry lunchtime crowds can't be wrong, and if there's a wait, it's usually worth it.
Vellee Deli is now open in the skyway, and they're lining up indeed.
A word of advice: go early. The new location opens at 10:30 a.m., and by 11 the lunch crowd was already snaked around the velvet ropes inside of the space. By 11:30 the line extended well down the building hallway, and another velvet rope was ultimately instituted to keep crowds from barricading the throngs of passersby who stared, mouths agape.
What could possibly be such a draw?
The same great BBQ you've come to know and love from the food truck is here, along with a full menu of other treats, all available kicked up with sun-dried tomato chile if you so choose.
Even on day one, service staff kept up shockingly well considering the crush: There was no need to wait even five minutes for food to arrive, and there's a basic but airy dining room in back to stay and enjoy, outfitted with communal tables that some approached like the dreaded lunchroom cafeteria. Minnesotans: Your fellow diners don't bite. Unless they're biting a lemongrass sausage, and that's nothing to be afraid of.
The menu is about 13 items deep including sandwiches, burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas, sides, and a full selection of Jarritos Sodas.
