Most vegetarians are used to simply substitute stuffing and potatoes for the traditional Tom when grazing from the Thanksgiving spread. But with all the mock-meats available, the only hard part is picking the right one. We checked in with Elizabeth Archerd, Member Services Manager at the Wedge,to give us to lowdown on what to buy. Here's what she had to say about everything from Quorn Turk'y Roast (pictured above) to Tofurkey roast with tempeh "legs"and gravy. (Also, the Wedge is open Thanksgiving Day, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
Wedge Deli Mushroom Walnut Loaf
This vegan loaf does contain some soy, but that is not the dominant flavor. It's available by the slice, in the service case, or as part of a full-meal vegan plate which will be available in the self-serve case. The $12.00 plate includes all the sides, like Maple Glazed Yams with Cranberries, Green Beans Amandine, Vegan Mashed Potatoes, Mushroom Gravy, Cranberry Relish and Dinner Roll, and comes on a microwavable plate. (The Deli service case always has a variety of vegetarian and vegan entree alternatives available in whatever portion people want. All the side dishes mentioned on the plate should be available al la carte, and there are also Roasted Root Vegetables and Wild Rice Salad with Craisins.)
Field Roast Celebration Roast
In the refrigerated case between the milk and the eggs, we have these little grain roasts which are stuffed with a savory vegetable filling that includes apples, squash, mushrooms, carrots and spices. It's vegan, contains wheat, and is currently on sale.
The Tofurkey roast is available by itself or in a dinner, with tempeh "legs" and gravy, in the freezer case, along with Tofurky mushroom gravy. Tofurky is made primarily from wheat gluten and tofu, and all the products are completely vegan, contains soy. All Tofurky products are also currently on sale!
Quorn Turk'y Roast
Also in the freezer case, Quorn products are vegetarian and made primarily of a mycoprotein--a tasty little fungus. Quorn contains egg white and is produced in a facility that processes gluten wheat and soy. (Our freezer cases always include a variety of meat-free burgers and such, but for the holiday appetizers people might be interested in the Chicken-Free Buffalo Wings. All vegan.)
I have to put in a plug for buying a little squash, hollowing it out as one would a pumpkin for carving a Jack o'lantern, and then stuffing it with our wild rice salad or bread stuffing and baking it (little cap on) for 45-minutes to an hour. A lovely individual serving for a vegetarian.
