It's 10 p.m. on a Sunday and you're starving. Sure, you could resort to Chinese food, order Domino's, or brave the screaming sports fans at Bulldog, but sometimes all we want is to chill in a booth with a cup of coffee and some Monday-fearing friends.
Until recently, Minneapolis's late-night diner scene was limited to Hard Times Cafe on the West Bank. Though we love Hard Times with our whole hearts, we realize it's not for everyone. If you're looking for diner eats in the evening but aren't a fan of crust punks, endearingly snotty service, and Slipknot, you're in luck. Last month, the Uptown Diner on Hennepin announced that they would be open until 11 p.m. on weeknights, expanding their service time by eight hours.
"We've always shut down at 3 o'clock and just did breakfast and lunch, but our dinner business has really taken off on Thursday to Sunday, so I was like 'let's open her up,'" general manager Joe Sipprell says. "We've had a pretty good response considering we've only been doing it for two weeks."
Uptown Diner will still be open 24 hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.Be sure to hound the Diner's Facebook for daily deals, like buy-one-get-one omelets, free pancakes, and a cheeseburger, fries, and a malt for $9.95. One last word of advice: Don't leave the establishment without taking home one of their to-die-for caramel rolls.
