Up Down, the hotly anticipated nostalgic arcade bar coming to Uptown, opens this Saturday.
Seven more things you'll want to know before you grab that fistful of quarters:
1. Here's a short list of games you can expect to find. (For the full list, you gotta head over):
6-player X Men
4-player Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (as well as Turtles in Time, the sequel)
Donkey Kong, Tron, and "all the classics"
Four lanes of classic skee ball. "The ones with the long wooden lanes."
The focus on multi-player games will create a vibe with more human-to-human interaction, rather than human-to-game interaction, which can be a bad vibe, indeed. Don't you interact enough with your technologies? Up Down says if "arcade games were outlawed tomorrow, we would still be a great bar."
In fact, they say the majority of Up Down patrons at the original Up Down, in Kansas City, don't play a single game.
Patrons will notice a minimum of table space to encourage yet more interaction. But "every single game" has a ledge next to it so that your drink will always be safely in sight.
All the food is fast-casual, with no table service. Pizza by the slice means waiting is minimal, and hey, you can hold it in one hand, meaning you don't have to "eat your pizza first" the way you did as a kid. Bring your parents to Up Down if you want, but they don't get to tell you what to do anymore. (But don't bring your kids, please: Up Down is a bar first, meaning it's a 21-and-up experience.) The bar will also serve a full appetizers menu and salads list plus sweet treats.
Count 'em: 60 beers on tap and around half of them will be local craft handles.
A front patio will be home to a life-sized Jenga and Connect 4.
Are you a Rick Flair or Andre the Giant buff? In addition to '80s and '90s movies, they will also screen "a ton" of pro wrestling.
Up Down will never "ever, ever, ever, ever" have a cover, or a "VIP" section.
Their mantra: "Come in, relax, and geek out a little bit."
Up Down opens Saturday, June 26 at 6 p.m.
The first 100 people through the door will receive 20 free game tokens.
