Tour de Farm in Tangletown, Gastro non Grata in the Main Room: The Week in Food

There's a lot on tap this week: swig on Shakespeare, get in a food fight, and see our own Gastro non Grata at First Ave. Enjoy your Week in Food.

Monday 6/21

  • A Midsummer Swig: sounds like our kind of culture. Enjoy music, local food, and drinks at CodeSpace while raising money for Tales of Hoffman: A Picnic Operetta, an upcoming celebration of opera and urban agriculture. Take a guided tour of the Soo Line Community Garden, taste appetizers prepared by Chef Nick Schneider, and sip on cocktails by Birk Gruden of Bradstreet Crafthouse. RSVP at 612-619-2112 or mixedprecipitation (at) 7 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday 6/22

  • Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Watch the experts duke it out as Cheeky Monkey hosts Superbugs and Mega-Drugs vs. Affordable Beef. On this side of the ring you have Maryn McKenna, author of Superbug: The Fatal Menace of MRSA; on that side of the ring is Thom Peterson, director of governmental affairs for the Minnesota Farmers Union. There are sure to be many exciting rounds on the overuse of antibiotics and whether banning or over-regulating the drugs would lead to higher meat and milk prices. 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday 6/23

  • Get saucy! Improve any dish by learning how to make a few basic sauces. Nothing too fancy--just good, old-fashioned, disguise-your-Brussels sprouts (and other grody, but good for you foods). $23/$20 for members. 6 to 8 p.m. Mississippi Market West 7th.

Thursday 6/24

  • It seems an oxymoron, but by enjoying dishes prepared by Minneapolis' most accredited chefs, you can help end childhood hunger. Since 1988 Share our Strength has hosted Taste of the Nation events throughout the United States and Canada that raise money for the most effective nonprofit organizations working toward that goal. Enjoy the best of the Twin Cities' restaurant scene and feel good about making a difference. $58. 6 to 11 p.m. Guthrie Theater.

Friday 6/25

  • It's been a difficult few months (two seconds) without hockey. Celebrate the NHL draft and the season's kick-off at Apertif. Minnesota Wild radio host Kevin Falness and broadcaster Mike Greenlay will host the event, joined by Wild celebrities, including former player Wes Walz, Wild goalie coach Bob Mason, and the team's mascot Nordy. Get in on the action as the team makes its first-round draft pick. 6 to 9 p.m

Saturday 6/26

  • Be a hero: win a year's supply of Bell's beer at Stub and Herb's Fermented Eclipse Bell's Festival. Enjoy the special release of several new Bell's products, trivia, live music, and BBQ chicken smoked with Expedition Stout barrels. 3 to 10 p.m.

Sunday 6/27

  • Tour de Farm heads to Tangletown. Join Corner Table Chef Scott Pampuch and Michelle Gayer of Salty Tart Bakery as they host a sit-down supper at Tangletown Garden Farm. Learn about local food and savor dinner, drinks, and socializing with like-minded people. $150. 4 p.m. to sunset. Visit for more information.

  • Gastro non Grata hits the First Avenue main room in its biggest gastronomy adventure to date. Chefs: Erik Anderson of Sea Change, Heather Hartman of Spoonriver, Jim Grell of Modern Café, and Mike Philips of the Craftsman. Beer: Furthermore, Lagunitas, Bells. Music: Pink Mink, Private Dancer, Unknown Prophets, Birthday Suits, and School of Rock (plus you never know--maybe this guy will make an appearance). $12 advance/$15 at the door. 5:30 to 10 p.m.
