Tosca: Turtle Bread's newest eatery
For years, literally, I've been walking, biking, driving, past the Turtle Bread on 44th Street and Beard in Linden Hills and wondering when the owner, Harvey McLain, might get around to opening the adjacent restaurant.I know McLain's busy...the guy's looking after Cafe Levain, Pizza Biga, plus the bread-making operations, but I think he's been working on this restaurant since maybe 2003.
In any case, I now have the pleasure of telling you that Tosca is open and the kitchen is helmed by Landon Schoenefeld, the opening chef of the Bulldog NE (and yes, the man best known for that mustard incident). Anyway, I talked to Schoenfeld yesterday and after working at a several other restaurants (Barbette, Biga, Levain, Porter & Frye, Brasa...) and looking into opening his own place, he decided to jump in and help Harvey open the 44th Street restaurant.
Right now, Tosca is open for breakfast and lunch and Schoenefeld plans to start serving dinner in January. He describes the breakfasts as being "American style with some Mediterranean, French, and Italian ingredients." That mean omelets, frittatas, French toast, pancakes with all sorts of toppings. If these breakfasts are anything like the killer Reuben eggs Benedict he was serving at Porter & Frye, they'll be tempting every Edina mom to give up her diet.
For lunch, Tosca's serving salads--beet salad, poached tuna with white beans and olives, etc.--plus sandwiches and pastas, including gnocchi, lasagna Bolognaise, and "adult mac & cheese."
