Top Brewer Minnesota first-round event this Thursday
Minnesota's best homebrewers going head to head
The "Iron Chef" of Minnesota home brewing is about to get under way. Starting this Thursday, October 11, a select group of experienced brewers will go head to head to become the state's first Top Brewer. Twenty-four competitors will square off in the qualifying round that will narrow the field to four. But in the end only one will emerge victorious. To that mighty meister of beer goes the glory and the opportunity to brew their winning draught for commercial release at Lucid Brewing.
Top Brewer Minnesota is a project of Chop Liver Beer Fests and Thrifty Hipster in association with Blue Plate Group and Lucid Brewing Company. It's intended as a celebration of the local craft beer scene. By uniting local breweries, beer lovers, home brewers, and craft beer bars in one event, the organizers hope to showcase each group and highlight the contributions they make to the community.
The competition takes place over two rounds. For the first round a group of 24 area home brewers were selected from a pool of applicants, each one submitting his or her best beer for judging. The beers will be judged six at a time at four events happening over consecutive Thursdays at beer-friendly venues throughout the Twin Cities. Guests and representatives from Lucid, Blue Plate Group, Northern Brewer, and ThriftyHipster are the judges. The winner at each of these events will advance to round two.
In the second round each brewer will be given ingredients and a recipe. The one who brews the beer the best will be named Top Brewer Minnesota at a finals event held on February 2 at the Lucid Brewery. The winner will have the opportunity of a lifetime; they will brew their winning recipe at full-production level with the Lucid brewmaster, help name their beer, and be featured at release events in March.
The four first-round events are limited to 200 attendees and cost $15. The admission includes a complimentary Lucid beer, live music from local artists, and food items paired with Lucid beers by Blue Plate chefs.
The first event happens Thursday at the Groveland Tap, 1834 St Clair Ave. in St. Paul. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. with the main beer sampling taking place from 7 to 8:30. Attendees will be able to register as judges. Musical entertainment will be provided by singer/songwriter George Scot McKelvey. Advance tickets can be purchased online.
