Top 5 strangest ingredients in Thanksgiving stuffing [ACTUAL RECIPES]
Maybe you've been serving the same boring turkey dressing at Thanksgiving for years and you're ready to break out of your rut. Or maybe you'll just enjoy watching Aunt Martha gag when you tell her, after dinner, what her two helpings of stuffing were made from. Either way, here are five real Thanksgiving stuffing ideas using highly questionable ingredients that are sure to get the dinner conversation rolling.
5. White Castle Sliders Every year the low-brow burger chain reminds us that its Sliders make a great Thanksgiving stuffing. And every year we can't decide whether to be amused or disgusted. But when you think about it, this recipe is really just using hamburger (we're assuming) and bread, so how bad can it be? If anyone has tried this, tell us about the results in the comments below. Ingredients: 10 White Castle hamburgers, pickles removed 1½ cups diced celery 1 ¼ teaspoon each ground thyme and ground sage 1 ½ teaspoon coarse ground black pepper ¼ cup chicken broth
Directions: Tear burgers into small pieces into a large mixing bowl with the celery, thyme, sage, and black pepper. Toss to combine. Add chicken broth and toss again. Stuff the mixture into the turkey cavity just before roasting. The recipe makes about nine cups, enough for a 10- to 12-pound turkey. Note: Allow one White Castle hamburger for each pound of turkey, which will be the equivalent of ¾ cup of stuffing per pound.
4. SPAM Is there anything this versatile meat-like substance can't do? Here's a stuffing recipe that can dress up any fowl:
Ingredients: 1/2 cup long-grain rice 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup chopped celery 1 tablespoon butter or margarine 1 (12-ounce) can SPAM Classic, finely chopped 1/4 cup marinara sauce 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves 1 roasting chicken Pepper, to taste
Directions 1. Cook rice according to package directions. 2. In medium skillet, sauté onion and celery in butter until tender. Add SPAM Classic, marinara sauce, rosemary, and pepper; stir well. Mix in rice. 3. Spoon rice mixture into body cavity of chicken [or turkey]; truss and roast as usual.
3. Popcorn This couldn't be worse in theory than oyster stuffing. Serve with a 40-ounce diet soda and an oversized box of Junior Mints.
(This legitimate recipe, by the way, is not to be confused with several illegitimate ones floating around the web (like this one) that call for unpopped popcorn. You can tell the bird is done when the turkey blows itself out the oven door.)
Ingredients: 1/2 cup popcorn kernels 2 tablespoons oil 1 large onion, diced 3 stalks celery, diced 1/2 cup chopped parsley 1/4 pound butter, melted mixed sage, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper to taste
Directions: Pop the corn in hot oil in a large covered skillet. Grind the popped kernels in a food processor. Soften the onion, celery, and parsley in butter. Add the ground corn and season to taste.
2. Alligator Alligator stuffing might be a bit dangerous to make completely from scratch, so we're not including a recipe. But you can order it online from Heberts Meats in Oklahoma here. It's made with onion, bell pepper, rice, Cajun seasoning, tomato sauce, and lots and lots of gator.
1. Twinkies Apparently you use the cake for the stuffing and the crème filling for the turkey glaze. Try this recipe and maybe your turkey will have a shelf life of 50 years too.
(serves 15 to 20)
Ingredients: 1 (8 1/2-oz.) package yellow corn muffin mix, prepared and baked according to package instructions 6 Twinkies, halved lengthwise 1 (14- to 18-pound) turkey 1 tart apple, peeled, cored, and diced 1/4 cup honey
Directions: 1. Remove the muffins from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. Scrape the creme-filling out of the Twinkies with a small spoon and reserve in small bowl. 3. Cut the Twinkie pastry into cubes and spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes, until lightly toasted. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. Decrease the oven temperature to 325 degrees. 4. Rinse the turkey. Crumble muffins into a bowl, add the apple and toasted Twinkies, and mix lightly. Loosely stuff the mixture into the turkey and truss the legs. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack set in a roasting pan. Roast the turkey for 12 to 15 minutes per pound, until the thigh temperature reaches 175 to 180 degrees and the juices run clear. 5. In a small bowl, combine the honey with the reserved creme filling and mix well. Brush the turkey with the honey mixture during the last 10 to 15 minutes of roasting time. 6. Remove the turkey from the oven and let stand for 20 minutes before carving.
