After a soft opening in mid-May, Tin Whiskers, a new downtown St. Paul brewery, is holding its official Grand Opening today at 4 p.m.
You may have seen Tin Whiskers pouring samples at the 22nd Annual City Pages Beer Festival last weekend. The new brewery already has five beers on tap -- Flipswitch IPA, Wheatstone Bridge, Batch Beta Carb, Batch Beta Nitro, and Batch Alpha -- a range of IPAs, wheat beers, and stouts. For the opening they will unveil their sixth brew, Ampere Amber.
Tin Whiskers is currently producing beer for the taproom and keg accounts. There is room for eight more taps in the taproom as the operation grows and the lineup expands.
The brewery is located in the Rossmor building next door to Black Sheep Pizza. As for its name, a tin whisker is a term for a short circuit caused by a soldering error. The name was chosen by the three founders, Jeff Moriarty, George Kellerman, and Jake Johnson, who met in college and were electrical engineers prior to starting the brewery. That engineering background runs throughout the open taproom, with circuit-board flight paddles, a massive toasting robot mural, and a clean and simple environment reminiscent of a lab.
The natural lighting on both sides of the room increases the open feel, with a bar cutting through the center and separating the public area from the brewing space while providing an excellent view of the equipment. There are 15 bbl fermenters with a capacity of up to 1,700 bbl per year in clear view from most of the taproom's seating. The space seats roughly 100 in total.
Tin Whiskers is one of several additions to downtown St. Paul including the soon-to-open Green Line light rail, the Saints' new ballpark, and a Lunds store. Mayor Chris Coleman will formally cut the ribbon at 4 p.m., followed by a merchandise giveaway and a performance by the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band.
