The Wienery talks wieners for National Hot Dog Month
All hail the giant wiener!
In case you weren't already in the know, July is National Hot Dog Month. In honor of the event, we decided to check in on the Wienery, winner of City Pages' Best Hot Dog honors. We spoke to Gus, one of the cooks, who graciously answered all of our questions.
What is the most popular item on your menu?
Well, it is a toss up because we sell many items in equal amounts, but probably the Chicago Dog (relish, onion, tomato, sport peppers, pickle & celery salt) by default--that is what people get when then don't know what else to order. The Cadillac (choice of brat, polish, Italian, veg brat or veg Italian topped with cheese, egg, and bacon wrapped in a pancake) is also really popular--it is our version of pigs in a blanket, plus the Drive-In Dog (Southern special with coleslaw, chili & cheese) and Picnic Dog (baked beans, cheese & coleslaw) are really all favorites.
What is the weirdest request you have ever had?
We actually had a guy order a hot dog with everything on it. We thought he meant he wanted a Chicago Dog, but really he wanted everything on it: bacon, ham, sausage, eggs. cheese, pickles, and all the rest. He ate it, and he loved it.
Anything special planned for National Hot Dog Month?
Not really that I know of, but maybe we should all get a day off to celebrate.
What is a wienery?
You might have to ask someone else about that to see if there is an alternate meaning, but to me this is a wienery.
Any closing words?
Come in and get dogs!
If you're looking for more fun on a bun, you can also take a hot dog road trip this Thursday, July 15, to Luverne, Minnesota, for Hot Dog Night . The town will be giving away 10,000 hot dogs (not to mention throwing a bonus Patriotic Pie Party).
