The third annual Picnic Operetta kicked off its season with its debut performance of Alcina's Island last weekend. Its singers drew enough attention outside of the Eat Street Community Garden that a couple of cars pulled over on First Avenue, put on their hazard lights, and watched for several minutes.
The operetta combines beautiful singing with plenty of camp and kitsch. (What else would you expect from a guy wearing a goldfish on his head?) The performance is broken up by plates of snacks, passed through the audience at points corresponding to the plot, created from local, garden-fresh foods by chef Nick Schneider. Watching the show while munching pickled ramps and red pepper jerky, or taking a swig of home-brewed kombucha, is truly a revolutionary way to experience opera.
