Any bar or restaurant that stands in this town for a couple of decades becomes an icon. Add to that a scripted marquee as recognizable as the Grain Belt sign, and when the Modern Cafe went dark, Northeast had a collective freakout.
But then came the new that the Oulman's bought it— also owners of the nearby 331, Como Dockside and St. Paul's Amsterdam Bar, and we could breathe a little easier. Jon Oulman is a renowned curator of spaces, and he, like us, have a vested interest in not seeing the place go to pot. He told us in an interview that he and his son Jarett were in a position where they all but had to buy it— they didn't want to be stuck on a block where an unknown entity might grab it and turn it into an atrocity.
So, The Modern, now the Sheridan Room will remain some kind of an "Americana" place, with a takeout element. What kind of Americana? Midwestern fare with breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, plus full bar, reports the Minneapolis/ St. Paul Business Journal.
No word on the million dollar question: will they retain the famous pot roast recipe?
Watch for the opening by the end of this year.
