There's a brand-spanking-new spot on Hennepin, and it's already hawking a happy hour in the old Hollywood Video location. The Hot Dish took a break from the fair and stopped in to see if the deals were happening.
Venue: The latest Blue Plate venture boasts a friendly and cute bar front and center and the promise of burgers, oysters, whiskey and eggs (which our own intrepid Joy Summers tried out). Already, the Lowry has tons of action and fulfills the need of partiers in the Wedge with an alternative to the lowlights of Lyle's and all those restaurant-forward joints nearby. This is truly a place to get a decent drink and snack that falls somewhere between 3-4-1's and fine dining.
Verdict: This happy hour has drinks for all comers, whether you are looking for a stiff one or a bit of the brew. There are also just enough apps to keep your stomach from growling. The pickled veggies take a bit of getting used to, but the chicken wings and green beans are a decent deal. And if you're brave, there's always Jeff's choice cocktail of the night, which varies from visit to visit. The Hot Dish hopes for that plucky ancestor of the martini, the Martinez or their standard Manhattan, but others may hope for the Brown Derby (honey syrup, grapefruit juice, and bourbon) or a Sazerac. It ain't haute, but that's just the point. Sometimes, you seek comfort and familiarity--and with this kind of happy hour, the Lowry may just become a regular Uptown haunt.
