Hold on to your seats fellow Twin Citians and get ready for an event of Thompsonesque proportions. On Thursday, July 18, Maryland's Flying Dog Brewery will be heading on over to St. Paul's The Happy Gnome to throw a party in honor of one of their most revered patrons, the late "Dr." Hunter S. Thompson.
Th event release promises a "Celebration of All Things Weird and Strange" as they celebrate what would've been Thompson's 76th birthday. They'll be running footage that commemorates the good doctor's life while offering various prize give-a-ways including a prize for the best Hunter S. Thompson look-a-like. Flying Dog will also provide a variety of beer samples in order to help keep the evening well lubricated.
Flying Dog has been celebrating the birthday of the good doctor on an annual basis at their Maryland based brewery in an event that they rightly refer to as Gonzofest. This year they'll be extending part of the party to The Happy Gnome where they'll feature several versions of their Gonzo Imperial Stout, a beer they launched in 2005 just after Thompson's passing. Flying Dog's brewer will be on hand to both talk about and answer various beer related questions.
According to the folks at Flying Dog, their first brewery in Aspen, CO, was just down the way from Thompson's famous Owl Farm, his long time home and "fortified compound." Rumor has it that shortly after opening the brewery, Thompson made his way down for a visit and became a fast fan of their craft brews. Thompson would go on to introduce the brewers to his friend, illustrator and renowned artist Ralph Steadman. Steadman's artwork is prominently featured on all of Flying Dog's craft beers.
Mark your calendars now because this beer and weird-centric event starts at 6 p.m. on July 18. According to The Happy Gnome, "Everyone is welcome -- no reservations will be required, or even allowed," so it has the potential to get a little zany.
