The Growler, local beer magazine, launches today
Not many cities have their own beer-focused magazine. Although there may be others, Philly Beer Scene is the only one I'm aware of. But the Twin Cities are about to join that rarefied group. The Growler, a new brew-centric, bi-monthly published by beer-fest producer the Beer Dabbler launches today with a release bash at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul.
The Dabbler folks describe The Growler's focus as "craft beer and the community and culture surrounding it." The magazine will include feature stories, regular columns, an events calendar, and brewer profiles. You'll also find restaurant reviews from The Heavy Table, beer reviews from the Ale Jail, Thomas Liquors, Zipp's Liquor, Surdyk's & Four Firkins, craft beer comics including Louie the Loon's pub reviews, and recipes from Dinner on the Farm. As for the "culture surrounding the beer," look for pieces on the local arts, music, and bicycling scenes. The Growler will be distributed free in area beer stores, restaurants, and bars. Initial distribution is planned at over 300 locations around the Twin Cities.
The first issue offers offer a unique look at pairing outdoor adventures and northern Minnesota breweries, a glance back at the pint law a year after its signing, and an engaging interview with Jacquie Berglund (philanthropist and founder of Finnegan's) about her work with the Emergency Food Shelf Network's Harvest for the Hungry program and Finnegans' Mission of "Turning beer into food."
Copies of the inaugural issue will be available at the launch party. The festivities start at 5:30 p.m. with beer tapped at 6. There will be music from Big Trouble and Silverback Colony. The first 250 guests will get a free pint of beer in a commemorative glass. They'll be giving away tickets to the Beer Dabbler festivals, Social Science at the Science Museum, Dinner on the Farm, and more.
