The Badger Hill 5K and St. Paul Beer Fest top our list of brew-based weekend activities

Minnesota winter skipped straight into summer this year, and the great thing about summer, of course, is the beer festivals. After City Pages' own 22nd annual Beer Festival kicked off the season, the St. Paul Summer Beer Festival will hold its sixth annual event at the State Fairgrounds this weekend, with over 100 breweries, live music, beer seminars, and more. Local companies such as 612Brew, Bent Brewstillery, Excelsior, Leech Lake, and others will be pouring samples. VIP tickets are no longer available, but general admission can still be nabbed.

On Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., Lift Bridge will be at Walker Home Center for the Walker Burger Battle, which pits local Walker, Minnesota, restaurants against one another for the title of the best burger.

Badger Hill is sponsoring a beer run 5K in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, starting near the Local. The 5K will go through open streets and parks and finish with a free beer and glass. The first to finish receives a growler, and there is also a "soda run" option available. Proceeds benefit the youth development nonprofit Bolder Options.

Fulton and Indeed will jointly take over the taps at Uptown Tavern on Sunday. There will be eight beers each from the two Minneapolis brewers, all to be paired with a hog roast.

Later in the week, on Thursday, June 12, Summit hosts Pints for Paws. Fifteen dollars will purchase two pints and an evening with adoptable dogs. Proceeds benefit Pet Haven, and B52 Slider Squad will be serving food.

In new-beer news, Fulton has introduced the Randonneur, a summer saison. It will be available on draft this summer, and the brewery plans to bottle it next year. Boom Island is now brewing Framboise, a wheat ale aged on raspberries and will soon add Noire, a black IPA with a citrusy aroma. Surly has Bitter Brewer, a sessionable pale ale, on draft at the brewery along with the sour Pentagram. In St. Paul, Tin Whiskers celebrated their official grand opening on Thursday and introduced Ampere Amber.

Boom Island is hosting food trucks this weekend, with Lulu's Street Food (Friday) and O-Cheese (Saturday). On Friday, Summit hosts live music and food from Taste of Target Field. On Saturday they will host a Cajun 2 Geaux crawfish boil (crawfish fans are asked to RSVP at Summit's website). In St. Louis Park, at Steel Toe Brewing, B52 Slider Squad (Friday) and Asian Invasion (Saturday) will serve up hot food.
