The Bachelor Farmer opens sausage cart, a house-made twist on the hot dog stand

Sometimes it's nice to take a step down from souped-up food trucks and get back to the original mobile food peddler: the hot dog stand.

Then again, when a foil-wrapped beef frank on a smushed white bun isn't exactly what you're craving, where can you turn? Well, Hot Dishers, you can turn your wheels in the direction of Bachelor Farmer, which opened a sausage cart earlier this month and is serving house-made versions of all the sausage stand staples.

Get a pork sausage on a Wuollet bakery bun (the one item Bachelor Farmer doesn't make itself), topped with house-made sauerkraut, sweet onion-pepper relish, spicy mustard, and ketchup, and served with a side of crispy potato chips for just $6. Tack on a fat dill pickle for $2 and a water ($1) or bottle of Virgil's root beer ($2) and you've got yourself a mighty fine little lunch.

The sausage is made from pork delivered to Bachelor Farmer (two whole hogs each week) by Pork and Plants Farm in Altura, Minnesota. The meat is butchered in-house and ground with garlic, black pepper, coriander, and fennel. The layered flavors stand shoulders above the one-dimensional, sodium-laden franks to which you might be accustomed. Plus, this has the pleasant snap of a real, honest-to-goodness sausage link.

There isn't much by way of seating here -- just a handful of small, colorful chairs in the little nook where the sausage stand sits -- but this stretch of First Street isn't terribly busy, so you can always grab a patch of curb and enjoy the summer sun while you lunch.

We're pretty fond of a pared-down menu, something that conveys a sense of purpose and makes things simple for a diner in a hurry. The purpose here is fairly straightforward: easy access to delicious, high-quality sausages.

"It's a fun way to get out and offer a lunch option. It's not feasible for us to do a full-service lunch," says Zach, the man behind the stand on the day we happened by. His last name? "Carter," he says. "Like one who runs a cart."

It doesn't get more straightforward than that.

The Bachelor Farmer sausage cart is located at 200 N. First St. and is open Wednesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
