Right after reporting on some of the food and drink items that are new to Target Field this season, we received a tip that should prove very exciting for fans of Surly Cynic, Bender, Coffee Bender, Bitter Brewer, and Hell -- all available on a rotating basis throughout the season in section 124. Surly announced it is producing a beer that will be exclusive to Target Field.
The new brew is appropriately called Bandwagon, and it's a West Coast India Pale Ale. "We called it Bandwagon because right now there's a lot of bandwagons to jump on," says Omar Ansari, founder and president of Surly Brewing. "So it really named itself. We've got the craft beer bandwagon, the IPA bandwagon, the Surly bandwagon, and even the Twins bandwagon. Well, now we're here, so it's time to get on the Bandwagon while there's still room."
Here's how the company describes the bubbly brown:
This IPA is brewed with pale and crystal malts, centennial and chinook hops, and fermented with English ale yeast. Bandwagon is pale gold in color and has flavors of caramelly biscuits slathered in pineapple-orange marmalade.
Sounds like it will be reminiscent of a fancy brunch, so perhaps it will pair well with one of the many sausages available at the ball park. So what's the reasoning behind doing a West Coast style brew for a Midwest stadium? "This is the first time we've made a West Coast IPA -- it's the trendiest American craft beer style to complement the great American pastime," Ansari says. "We're psyched to be bringing our first new beer we've brewed in a while to Target Field -- it's a hoppy ale that'll go well with an afternoon of watching the Twins."
