Summit's Silver Anniversary Ale--a sneak peek

25 years of beers.

25 years of beers.

25 years of beers.
In 1986 Ronald Reagan was president, Top Gun was a biggie in movie theaters, and The Cosby Show was cracking folks up every Thursday night. 1986 was also the year when Summit Brewing Company began, working out of a former truck parts store on University Avenue in St. Paul. And in 25 years, that little brewery has grown into one of the biggest names ever in the Minnesota beer scene.

So how are they going to celebrate this milestone? By making a special brew, of course, and we we're lucky enough to get a little taste of Summit's Silver Anniversary Ale before it hits stores on July 25th.

A take off on their Extra Pale Ale, fans of that beer will not be disappointed. Like the EPA, the Anniversary Ale is also very hop heavy, strongly scented, and aggressive. Once you get past the hop force field, all sorts of cool things are going on including flavors of orange peel, grapefruit, and florals, creating a nice balance. This beer would pair nicely with other strong flavors like smokey BBQ, or fried fish, and would be especially delicious with a New Orleans-style seafood boil: think spicy shrimp, crab, crayfish--if you can get 'em, Andouille sausage, corn, potatoes, and garlic.

In other Summit news, the seventh beer in Summit's popular Unchained Series--the ones where the brewers go crazy creating unique, limited edition brews--Honeymoon Saison will be in bars on July 11, and in stores the week of the 25th. This story is sweet: Honeymoon Saison, a take on French and Belgian farmhouse Saison ales, was created by brewer Sam Doniach in honor of his upcoming wedding, and is flavored with Minnesota honey in honor of his hunny bunny. Everyone together now, "Awwwww."
