It seems Summit has outdone itself with its new 90/- Scottish Style Ale, the second installment in the brewery's Unchained Series. The delicious new ale features a robust, smoky flavor with caramel overtones and will see limited local release in six packs and on tap between now and the end of the year.
In advance of Monday's 90/- event at Cherokee Sirloin Room, Hot Dish talked with brewer Eric Blomquist, who oversaw the development of the new brew.
Blomquist says the goal was to make an interesting and flavorful Scottish style ale that was also smooth. "Some versions can be aggressive in terms of roastiness or a peaty smokiness, but that wasn't what I was trying to get," he explained.
The result is a rich, malty beer with complex flavors and beautiful mahogany color. It has subtle spices and carbonation that strike a good balance between bitter and sweet, with a strong bite that finishes very smoothly. Our verdict? Mission accomplished.
The secret ingredient in 90/- is heather, which has been imported from Scotland. "There aren't too many examples of beers using this ingredient, but heather has been found to be used in brewing as far back as 2000 B.C.," Blomquist said. "In some sense, you can't get much more traditional than that."
Summit only brewed four batches of the 90/-, bottling the last of it last Monday, so supplies are only expected to last through the end of the year.
If you'd like to meet the man behind the new brew, catch Bloomquist tending bar with Summit founder Mark Stutrud next Monday at the Cherokee on 4625 Nicols Rd. in Eagan. There will be two-for-one specials on both the 90/- and the Summit EPA from 4-7 pm.
