Summit Unchained #9-Dunkel Weizen to be released this week
It's been two and a half years since Summit Brewing Company released Kölsch, the first of its Unchained Series beers, in August 2009. Since then the succession of beers conceived, controlled, and coaxed into being by Summit's crew of brewers has produced some of the most adventurous beers to come out of the St. Paul brewery. Dunkel Weizen, a German-style dark wheat beer and the ninth beer in the series, debuts tonight at a Stout's Pub beer dinner in St. Paul and tomorrow at Hell's Kitchen in Minneapolis. Additional release events are scheduled throughout the week.
Dunkelweizen--"dunkel" means dark--is the dusky cousin of hefeweizen, the light German wheat beers known for their cloudy appearance and characteristic banana/clove flavors. It shares those traits but has layers of luscious toffee and caramel, giving it extra depth. A great beer for spring, it strikes a balance between summery hefeweizen and the richer wheat bock beers that make soothing winter sippers.
The style has been kind of neglected in this country. Commercial examples are hard to find. Those that are available are mostly imports and may not be as fresh as one would like, a problem for a beer style that should be consumed as quickly as possible after brewing. That was part of brewer Eric Blomquist's motivation for making this beer. As he explains in an online video from the brewery, Blomquist has fond memories of drinking it in a Bavarian café on his honeymoon; one of those "right beer for the moment and the context" experiences. Since then it has been a style he enjoys but seldom gets to drink. Blomquist has been urging Summit to make a dunkelweizen for several years. Now with the Unchained Series, he has the opportunity to make it happen.
You can talk to Blomquist about his beer at release events happening this week at venues throughout the metro. Here is the schedule that Summit has released:
