Summer Beer Dabbler heads to Midway Stadium this weekend

Want to drink beer at Midway before Midway is no more?

Here's your chance: The sixth annual Summer Beer Dabbler takes place on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The festival is a boozy doozy, with over 80 breweries, live music, food trucks, and, naturally, a baseball theme. And since the stadium will soon be demolished, this will be your first and last shot at sipping all your favorite beers on this particular St. Paul Saints baseball diamond.

The Summer Beer Dabbler isn't just a chance to sample goods from exotic breweries near and far, it's a party with music, fireworks, and Mayor Chris Coleman's ceremonial "first pitcher." The festival has teamed up with the MN Brewery Running Series to offer a "Pre-Dabbler 2 Mile Trot" that begins at Gabe's by the Park and ends at the stadium in time for the opening of the gates.

Breweries at the festival are local, regional, and national, including American Sky, Bent Paddle, Clown Shoes, Horny Goat, Oskar Blues, Summit, and many more, and there will be more than 320 different beers in total. Attendees can quaff samples "of almost every style there is," says Beer Dabbler's Joseph Alton.

Food trucks Natedogs, Gastrotruck, Potter's Pasties, and Hola Arepa will be serving on site, and Crossing Guards, Hippo Campus, and Sonny Knight and the Lakers will provide the musical accompaniment. The Ericksons will sing the national anthem to start things off and once the kegs stop flowing, Beer Dabbler will conclude with a fireworks show.

After being held at Upper Landing Park in St. Paul last year, this is Beer Dabbler's first time at Midway Stadium. "The Beer Dabbler team all attended the Bob Dylan/Wilco/My Morning Jacket show last summer," Alton says of the new location. "We really enjoyed the environment when there are a few thousand souls drinking beer in the grass. We hope to have a similar vibe. Plus, we like unique venues and no one's ever held a beer fest on the field at Midway before."

Alton says the Beer Dabbler will maintain its presence at Saints games with the Beer Dabbler Bullpen. They are in discussion to move future events to Lowertown when the Saints vacate Midway.

Summer Beer Dabbler tickets are $40 in advance online and are also available at the Ale Jail, Thomas Liquors, the Four Firkins, and Elevated Beer Wine & Spirits. Tickets will be $50 on event day. Nearly 3,300 attended the event in 2013.
