Steam your veggies and dine with Santa (separately) this week in food

A surprisingly un-holidayed week of food events is in store for those looking to get out and get cooking (and drinking).

12/6 Swing by St. Paul's Wine Thief and Ale Jail Tuesday night to experience a tasting courtesy of Wisconsin's Capitol Brewery. The beer starts flowing at 5 p.m., and brewery staff will be on hand to discuss their wares and serve you drinks, which flow until they run out.

12/7 Chef Beth Dooley is also a published author, and Byerly's in St. Louis Park is hosting a cooking event to celebrate her new tome The Northern Heartland Kitchen. Attendees will get to see Dooley in action as she makes roasted mushroom, red pepper, and sage pizza, ginger squash and apple soup, barley pilaf with chickpeas and autumn vegetables, and cranberry sorbet. The class, which runs 6-7 p.m., costs $15 and comes with a $10 Byerly's gift card and complimentary wine pairings. To reserve your place, register online at the Byerly's website.

12/8 In this season of decadent holiday eating you might be on the lookout for lighter options. Enter the Wedge's class about steaming. This easy cooking method helps keep food moist and tender while showcasing the flavors. This demo class with a meal will highlight five classic steaming methods: with a steamer, pan steaming, oven steaming, cooking en papillote, and bain marie. Kick off the New Year with a healthy bang! 12/10 Head to Midwest Homebrewing and Winemaking Supplies on Saturday to learn how to make wine from varietal juice concentrates from all over the world. Students will learn the art of making excellent wines at home for a fraction of the cost of buying them. You'll also get the chance to taste several of the wines created from these concentrates. The 90-minute class begins at 10:30 a.m. and is free. Call 952.925.9854 to reserve a seat.

12/11 The big guy is coming to breakfast. Santa visits Tria restaurant, and you (and your kidlets) are invited. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. families will enjoy a breakfast of two eggs any way you like, two sausages, two strips of bacon and parmesan-leek potatoes while dining with the jolliest man in the land.
