State Fair beers to check out, samples at the Cultivate Tasting Hall, and more beer news
The Minnesota State Fair is upon us. While you're out and about in the metro checking out the latest deep-fried obsessions and prize hogs, why not swing by a local brewery for a fresh growler? This weekend sees a good mix of beer-related happenings and new beers with some nontraditional ingredients.
Bent Brewstillery opened its doors last night in Roseville and is open from 4 to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 2 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays. They currently have seven beers on tap and are running extended hours throughout the State Fair.
Friday night Surly and DeProef will tap their collaboration beer Long of Tooth at Mackenzie in Minneapolis. Several other Surlys will also be on tap. Indeed will be at the Four Firkins to promote Double Daytripper.
On Saturday, several local beers will be at the Tasting Hall at the Chipotle Cultivate Festival in Loring Park. Included are a special Cultivate Farmhouse Ale from Surly, exclusive to the event, and offerings from Tin Whiskers, Bauhaus Brew Labs, Lucid, and many others.
The MN Brewery Running Series continues with a 5K near Day Block Brewing at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Later in the week, on Wednesday, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman will be at a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the grand opening of Urban Growler.
Of course, the Land of 10,000 Beers exhibit is ongoing at the fair as well, with participation from most of the state's breweries.
There are a couple of new Minnesota beers on the market, including Indeed's fall seasonal Sweet Yamma Jamma ale, made with sweet potatoes, Summit Oktoberfest, and Unchained #16: Herkulean Woods, a lager made with maple syrup and spruce tips, as well as numerous offerings at the state fair: - Grain Belt Blu, made with real blueberries - Summit's The Villain, a black German-style lager - Flat Earth's Giggles' S'more Beer, a chocolate porter served in a chocolate/graham cracker rimmed glass - The return of Lift Bridge's Mini Donut beer
In food truck/brewery pairings this weekend, Rusty Taco will be at Bauhaus Brew Labs on Friday, Motley Crew's Heavy Metal Grill (Friday) and Red River Kitchen (Saturday) will park at Indeed, and B52 Slider Squad (Friday) and Anchor Fish and Chips (Saturday) will be at Surly.
