Move over Heggies, here comes something meatier
A night of beers and bocce just got an upgrade. One of St. Paul's favorite neighborhood bars, the Half Time Rec, has announced it will be getting a bit of a menu makeover, courtesy of Josh Thoma, owner of the lobster-centric Smack Shack.
Between the Smack Shack's journey from wildly popular food truck to massive North Loop restaurant, Thoma took a little detour through dive bar territory. He offered lobster boils at the 1029 Bar in Northeast Minneapolis, where Smack Shack food is still served.
A similar set up will soon be operating at Half Time Rec, but with a whole new menu. Thoma is calling the venture "Paddy Shack at the Rec." Rather than crustaceans, the menu will be filled with Irish style pub food: hearty stews, bangers, mash, maybe some colcannon. Thoma is still sorting it all out.
Currently, the food options at the Half Time Rec are limited to just a few varieties of that dive bar favorite, Heggie's Pizza. But soon a new kitchen to accommodate the food will be built out in the back where the ping pong table currently stands.
Other than the kitchen renovation, the bar environs won't change much. The Half Time Rec will remain loyal to its neighborhood vibe, and hopes to have the new menu up and running before the St. Paul beer flows green on St. Patrick's Day.
