St. Cloud Craft Beer Expo debuts January 22

There's a new beer fest in town. The first ever St. Cloud Craft Beer Expo happens in less than two weeks on January 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the St. Cloud Civic Center, 10 4th Ave S. Over 40 breweries are expected to be represented at the event. Food concessions will be available from the Civic Center. A $25 general admission ticket gets you unlimited samples and a commemorative tasting glass. Worried about driving home after the fest? A $50 admission includes a round-trip ride on a chartered bus from Midway Stadium in St. Paul. Act quickly if you want to ride the bus. Only a few spots left are left. The St. Cloud Craft Beer Expo is brought to you by Juno Choi and Mark Opdahl of Chop Liver LLC, the same folks who stage the very well organized St. Paul Summer Beer Fest

A wide range of local, regional, national, and international breweries will be at the fest. Minnesota favorites that are already slated to attend include Cold Spring, Crispin Cider, Finnegans, Flat Earth, Granite City, Harriet Brewing, Lake Superior, Leech Lake, Lift Bridge, Mantorville, McCann's, Summit, and Surly, as well as Rush River from just across the river in Wisconsin. You can also enjoy beers from Rogue, Boulevard, Tommyknocker, Ayinger, Lindemans, and many more. You won't run out of beers to taste. Attendees will have the opportunity to nominate their festival favorite for the People's Choice Award.

Four beer-education sessions will be offered at the expo. I will be moderating all of the sessions and presenting one. At 4:30 the staff at Northern Brewer will do a presentation on the basics of homebrewing. They'll tell you all you need to know to get started in the hobby and even give you a free how-to DVD and a coupon for a discounted starter kit. At 5 p.m. Doug Hoverson, author of The Land of Amber Waters will present on St. Cloud and Stearns County brewing history. At 5:30 I will present Beer and Cheese Paring with A Perfect Pint. I'll offer paired samples of great beers and cheeses from Minnesota and Wisconsin and give some tips for matching these perfectly paired delicacies. Finally, at 6 Chris Smith and Jon Messier will talk about how to taste beer to increase your awareness of subtle flavors and aromas and enhance your enjoyment of craft beer.

There will be entertainment at the event, but I'm told that details have not yet been solidified.
