Did you know that it is National Soup Month? It makes sense when you consider that January is usually the least forgiving of months, weather-wise. Soup is, after all, a soothing balm for those suffering from the flu. Its warming effect is much-needed human anti-freeze after plowing the driveway. And even when it's low-calorie, soup has a surprising ability to fill up even the hungriest of stomachs.
Saturday, January 31 Midtown Global Market (920 E. Lake St., Minneapolis) celebrates National Soup Month with a Global Soup Cook-Off. During the hours of noon to 2 p.m. thirteen vendors will be offering their best concoctions to sample. Try each one and vote for which ever you like best. Interested it making it at home? There will be recipes given away as well. Come around 11 a.m. and watch cooking demonstrations before the ladles come out and the lids come off.
Participating restaurants include Holy Land Grocery and Deli, Andy's Garage, Jakeeno's Trattoria, Manny's Tortas, Pham's Deli, Salsa a la Salsa, and many others. Samplers are asked to contribute a $3 donation, which will go towards Perspectives Kids Cafe, which provides nutrional, educational, self-esteem, and mentoring services for at-risk and homeless youth.
