Meet your local farmer Saturday

Classes, cruises, farm tours, smoothie-offs ... variety is truly the spice of life this Week in Food.

7/17 Sometimes in summer when it's 12 billion degrees out all we want to eat are appetizers and finger foods. If you feel the same way, get thee to "Kitchen Basics with Kate: Easy Appetizers" at the Linden Hills Co-op. Chef Kate will help make appetizers fun, easy, and delicious for students as she prepares delectable bites that can be served as a first course or maybe even become the whole meal. Recipes include classic bruschetta, cucumber rounds with dill boursin, and petite quiche. The class runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and costs $20 for members, $25 for nonmembers. To sign up call 612.922.1159.

7/19 Chef Noah Balow, sous chef from the acclaimed D'Amico restaurant Cafe Lurcat, constructs a fabulous meal paired with local beers at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Balow was recently awarded runner-up in the 2012 Jeune Commis Rôtisseurs competition (young chef competition) held at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Tonight's menu includes: roasted beet, watercress salad with goat cheese; lake trout amandine with farm-fresh green beans; hanger steak with bacon jam; and strawberry rosewater cheesecake in an almond crust. Everything will be paired with local beers, too. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and costs $50 for members, $60 for nonmembers. To reserve your seat call 952.443.1422.

7/20 If you missed June's Brews Cruise, you're in luck! Friday night is the July outing, which means a boat trip down the St. Croix River filled with Lift Bridge's beers and Wisconsin cheeses! For $30 you get two beers, a souvenir glass, cheese pairings, and a snack buffet. The cruise goes from 7 to 9:30 p.m., and you can buy tickets at Lift Bridge brewery or online here.

7/21 Head to the Midtown Global Market for its first-ever "Global Smoothie Smackdown." In the same tradition as the market's other popular cook-offs, guests will have the chance to sample from several MGM restaurants and grocers and to vote for their favorite concoctions. Refreshing, made-from-scratch smoothies with global twists are the theme, with all ingredients used in the smoothies available for purchase at Midtown Global Market. Sip your smoothie while swaying to the "sounds of the islands" by local musician Stoney Savanna, and win a prizes for sporting the most unique Hawaiian shirt. The contest begins at 2 p.m., and a $5 donation is recommended.

Saturday is also the 2012 Eat Local Farm Tour, sponsored by the Twin Cities-area natural food co-ops. This event takes knowing a farmer's name one step further by encouraging members of the public to visit local farms today to meet the people who make seasonal, fresh, local eating possible. Hands-on education about sustainable agriculture will be provided. All tours are self-guided and free, and the hours of operation will differ from farm to farm. Look for a free, detailed guidebook complete with maps, hours, and tour activities at all of the participating co-op locations (Eastside, Just Food, Lakewinds, Linden Hills, Mississippi Market, River Market, Seward, St. Peter, Valley Natural Foods, and the Wedge).
