Smokehouse Porter at Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub: A tall, dark, and handsome drink of the week
Warm up with the subtle smoke of Northbound's signature porter
Smokehouse Porter Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub $5/$3 Happy Hour
Pondering where to find your next perfect pint can feel like too many suitors and not enough lines on your dance card for all the craft breweries popping up around the Twin Cities. After being burned by roguish, sexy, and over the top brews, or left high and dry by a fleeting firkin of some rare varietal, isn't it time to settle in with something warming, familiar, and just plain nice? Belly up to Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub's community-supported bar and that's what you'll find in their Smokehouse Porter: the kind of beer that loves you back, even with porketta sandwich on your face. Let this satisfying sipper wrap you up in comfort and subtle good taste, ideally in the company of something you adore, be it a lover or a ramekin of whitefish dip. Unlike some smoked porters, with their synthetic notes of hot dog or pencil eraser, Northbound's Smokehouse Porter is an exercise in authenticity -- head brewer Jamie Robinson takes care of the malt smoking in-house. The result is complex but effortlessly drinkable, more burnt caramel than burnt campfire, crisp to start, with a slightly sweet, malty finish.
While the house porter is a winner in our books, by no means should you put all your eggs in one basket. Rush over if you can and heat things up with the Hot Box, an Imperial Smoked Pepper Porter collaboration with Indeed Brewing Company, for which Northbound smoked the peppers and the malts. Or stop in for the third beer in their seasonal Snow series, a decadent Raspberry Double Chocolate Stout by the name of Snownami, aged on real raspberries, cocoa nibs, and Belgian dark chocolate. Whatever your taste, the beer program is solid, with nary a dud in the bunch.
