Slayer = a new $18K coffee maker, not a metal band

Just when you started loving Clover-brewed coffee (available at Kopplin's, Black Sheep, Bull Run), along comes the Slayer. Also hailing from Seattle, these hand-built beauts make both drip and espresso and cost a whopping $18,000--remember when the $7,000 espresso machine at Five seemed expensive?--and are only found in about 20 coffee shops nationwide.

The Slayers, which debuted last summer, cede more control to the barista who may easily adjust the machine's pressure to change the textures or flavors of the shot. If you are a true coffee geek, watch this video of Slayer in action at the Specialty Coffee Association of America's recent show.
