Shag Sushi is closed and will reopen as Rojo
Adios, Shag. We barely knew ye. Hola, Rojo. Mexican will replace sushi in the North Loop location.
It was a bit of a head-scratcher, but one of the best, recently-opened North Loop concepts just didn't pan out. Maybe sushi crossed with a '70's theme was just too weird, after all. Still, we liked Shag for its unctuous platters of sashimi and blackened salmon belly that was nothing short of a sort of savory bacon from the sea.
Now, the space will be reimagined, according to the Mpls./ St. Paul Business Journal, as Rojo Mexican Grill, from the same owner, restaurateur Michael McDermott (who also owns Ling and Louie's and the forthcoming Lou Nanne's steakhouse in Edina). The place will open on November 9 at 730 Washington Avenue North in Minneapolis.
Downtown does have a dearth of Mexican fare. Masa is one place that helps fill the void, but it'll be closing temporarily on October 24. The space will undergo a brief remodel and reopen on November 9. Its owners predict it'll make for an easier sell at lunchtime. Having opened in February of this year, Shag barely lasted six months.
