Sea Change introduces new prime-time happy hour

It's been a busy week at Sea Change in Minneapolis. First chef de cuisine Erik Anderson was nominated by Food & Wine magazine as one of the Midwest's best new chefs, then he was recognized as one of the semi-finalists for a James Beard Award for best Midwestern chef. With all the heaping praise, you might expect his head to be a little swollen, but when we caught up with him Thursday night at the new Sea Change late-night happy hour, he was subdued. He smiled and accepted congratulatory handshakes and hugs before returning to his real domain, the kitchen.

All the news also presents a golden opportunity: Thanks to a new Sea Change happy hour, you can experience a budget-friendly dining experience courtesy of one of the most buzzed-about culinary players in town.

To draw in diners when the Guthrie patrons are busy next door, Sea Change is now featuring happy hour Sunday through Thursday from 8 to 11 p.m.  The drink specials include wine, beer, and signature cocktails. We sampled the herby, sweet vodka spiked with a thyme-infused simple syrup and topped with Pellegrino Limonata, garnished with a little fresh thyme sprig.

Sea Change also offers little bacon-packed burgers, topped with caramelized onion, ketchup, mustard, thousand island dressing, cucumber pickle coins, and romaine lettuce leaves cut into rounds, all packed into a little poppy seed  bun for only $5. But this is a seafood restaurant, which means the chef also offers his playful take on a fillet of fish. It looks familiar, but this is not drive-in food, even if it comes at the fast-food friendly price of five bucks. Not to be ignored are the briny, sweet, and in-season oysters.  Wednesday and Thursday next week, Sea Change is featuring these tasty little nuggets for only $1 apiece. Top them with a little cilantro mignonette and you're floating in a sea of tranquil luxury at a completely affordable price.
