Sample Circuit, Perennial Plate, and more: Your foodie calendar

This week, do something special for all the ladies of the world. According to Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, an exhibit in its last week at the Bell Museum, women provide almost half of the world's agricultural labor. View photos, track food as it travels from field to fork, and learn other fun facts (it's projected that by 2030 we'll spend only 15 minutes a day cooking) now through May 23. And don't forget: Minnesota Craft Beer Week kicks off today. Get your hops on at

Tuesday 5/18

  • Sample day! Forget Cheez Whiz on a Ritz at your local grocery store. Join Sample Circuit as it heads to Loring Kitchen and Bar to sip on Crispin cider and wines perfectly paired with Chef Junji's latest menu. $38. 5:30-7:30 p.m.

  • If you're more of a cheesehead, hop on over to Ginger Hop. In a surprising twist, the Chiang Mai Thai offshoot will sample cheeses from around the world paired with red and white wines. $35. 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday 5/19

  • Everybody gets their day, and this one's for you, gluten intolerants. Enjoy gluten-free pizza and stuffed shells and $3 Bard's beer at Pizza Luce to celebrate National Celiac Awareness Month. 5 p.m
  • Spring is here: it's time for romantic gestures. Learn how to roll sushi for your sweetie in a class at Roseville Area High School. $39. 6 p.m.

Thursday 5/20

  • There's nothing more good and tasty than a Spandex-clad superhero (yum). Join Simple, Good, and Tasty at Galactic Pizza for its May local foods event. Free appetizers provided. RSVP at info (at) 5:30-7:30 p.m.

  • Wash down your calzone and cannoli with World Wine Tasting at the Minneapolis Marriot West, where the Golden Valley Wine Society and Liquor Barrel will host a tasting with more than 100 wines. 7-9 p.m.

Friday, 5/21

  • From maple syrup to morels, shooting a turkey to butchering a lamb, you never know what chef and documentary filmmaker Daniel Klein will get into next. Hopefully your pocketbook as he hosts a fund-raising party with food, beer, and local bands to support the continuation of his free, Web-based show The Perennial Plate. 3321 Park Ave. S., Minneapolis. 7 p.m.

  • Speaking of morels--a little known place to find the dodgy buggers is on a cruise ship headed down the St. Croix River. Climb aboard the Grand Duchess with chefs Jim Kyndberg of the Bayport Cookery and Mark Rose of the Afton Inn for a seasonal menu featuring morels and wine and scotch tastings. $75. 6:30-9 p.m.

Saturday 5/22

  • We'd live in a cheese cave if such a thing were possible--set up shop and eat our meals off the walls. Try it for a night at the Faribault Cheese Cave Event, with appetizers by chef Jeff LaBeau and wine and microbrew pairings with Faribault Dairy cheeses. $30/person or $50/couple. 6-8 p.m.

  • The Midtown Global Market is a point-of-purchase nightmare. Suddenly, alone in your kitchen, you find bags full of exotic spices, grains, fish, and produce. Where's the tater-tot casserole?! Have no fear. Chef Molly Herrmann is here to help. In a new Midtown class series, "Cooking the Market," she'll expand your culinary imagination and spark inspiration for those POP finds. $50/class. 5-8 p.m.

Sunday 5/23

Pick your pleasure. The farmers markets are open for business: downtown St. Paul, downtown Minneapolis, or Kingfield.

Monday 5/24

  • Buy your Case of the Mondays a beer--and a duck confit with cabbage slaw and Creole mustard--at the Highland Grill , which will host a multi-course beer dinner, featuring various Summit ales. $55/person. Call 612-558-9271 for reservations. 7-8 p.m.
