Saint Paul: the drink recipe
Looking through a list of vintage drink recipes, I was excited to find a cocktail called Saint Paul. A gin and rum drink made with bitter lemon soda and Angostura bitters provided one challenge--locating bitter lemon soda. The soda is a product made by Schweppes (not lemon sour) and not commonly available. No worries, since I found an easy recipe for homemade bitter lemon, made from lemon, sugar, water, and club soda. Or, if you're a purist, you can find the soda online, or have it ordered by a store that carries Schweppes products. This drink was nice and light, perfect for a summer sipper.
Saint Paul 1 1/2 oz white rum
1 1/2 oz gin
bitter lemon soda (recipe below)
one dash Angostura bitters
Fill a tall glass with ice--stack the cubes one on top of the other--add gin and rum, fill with bitter lemon soda. Run one dash Angostura bitters over the top ice cube and let it slowly track through the drink--some sort of biblical martyr reference?
Bitter lemon soda (recipe courtesy of recipezaar):
2 lemons, cut with rinds on
2 1/2 cups of water
3/8 cup of sugar (just shy of 1/2 cup)
Bring water and lemons to a boil. Simmer 10-15 minutes, until lemons are soft. Remove from heat and stir in sugar. Cover and let cool, then strain into a separate container. Add club soda to taste. This soda is good on its own, too.
