Royal Grounds Coffee

4161 Grand Ave. S, Minneapolis

Tucked away in Kingfield, Royal Grounds took over the old Caffe Tempo space and is serving coffee, tea, and a selection of cold drinks to those seeking a quiet, contemplative coffeehouse. When we heard they had a red velvet mocha, it seemed a bit sweet and racy for the joint, so we had to check it out.

Marching into the neighborhood cafe with the painted tin ceiling and light jazz, we ordered a red velvet mocha in the late afternoon with no shame. The idea was to get our caffeine and sugar in one cute little package, and we were not disappointed. A hot mocha made with white chocolate, the RVM also comes adorned with white chocolate shavings and an ample drizzle of homemade raspberry syrup. And though you can get it without, do you really want to turn down the whipped cream?

Jim Heider, who owns the shop with his wife, Joanne, put together our treat and explained that the raspberry topping for the red velvet is a bit thicker than their usual (but also homemade) syrup for the various drinks they make. So while this isn't a beverage for someone who hangs at Bob's and prides themselves on java machismo, it'sperfect for someone looking to get both their sweet tooth and coffee jones assuaged, all the while lounging in über serene environs. Stir up the simmering RVM well and sit by the stove in back for maximum ironic summer enjoyment.
