Rosa Mexicano coming to City Center
Rosa Mexicano is coming to Minneapolis.
Rosa Mexicano, the nine-location restaurant chain that spread from New York to Miami to Los Angeles, is on its way to downtown Minneapolis. Before you start having flashbacks to the mediocre Mexican fare Chevy's used to offer at Seventh and Hennepin, realize that Rosa's approach is more upscale and authentic, closer to D'Amico's Masa. In fact, Rosa has enough culinary cred that Saveur magazine devoted a full page to its guacamole recipe.
The Business Journal reports that the restaurant has leased the former home of TGI Fridays at Sixth and Hennepin in City Center, which has sat empty since 2005. Rosa will seat 215 inside, plus 120 outdoors, with design work being done, in part, by Shea Design.
Downtown has proved a viable market for upscale restaurant chains, most notably with the successful addition of Fogo de Chao's Brazilian steakhouse. And as much as we like to see homegrown talent developed, an outside operator is far better than a darkened doorway.
