The Riverview Theater is showing two food flicks this month -- one of them nominated for "Best Documentary" at this year's Academy Awards -- as part of a "Celebrating Local Food, Creating Permanent Community Spaces" event. Tickets cost $10 and will be sold at the door only, starting at 6:30 p.m. Shows start at 7 p.m.
"The Garden" -- showing this Wednesday, September 9 -- chronicles a largely immigrant-run L.A. community garden and what happens when it gets sold off to a developer behind closed doors. The work earned itself an Oscar nod.
The second doc., "Food Fight," was described by The Oregonian as thematically similar to Michael Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma" (Pollan, as it happens, appears in the doc. as an interview subject.). It's showing September 16.
