Beer and cigars are the new pairing at Big Wood Brewing

Cigars are frequently paired with cognacs, whiskeys, and wines. Now you can step out of the humidor and into the craft beer world.

Big Wood Brewing in White Bear Lake is hosting a ticketed event for puffing and sipping this Wednesday, June 22. A $25 ticket will get you three beers and three cigar varieties. Scott O'Hearn, Territory Manager for Altadis USA Premium Cigars, will lead an educational session on the patio.

Here the fine flavors will meet and the smoke will wisp into the atmosphere pungently. The lineup will include a full spectrum of cigars, going from mild to robust in profile — similar to how breweries approach flights. O’Hearn will begin with a history of the different tobaccos, leaves, and preparation methods, and then share his expertise on the aromas and flavors.

Cigars are sold in a lot of liquor stores, and spotting a patron with a stogie on the patio is not uncommon, says Big Wood founder Jason Medvec. An occasional cigar smoker himself, Medvec sees it as a gateway toward a greater understanding of the craft, much like beer dinners do for his industry.

“I’m eager to learn a little about it,” he says, adding that it's meant to be educational. “It’s not so you can smoke three cigars in two hours.”
