Pizzeria Lola in Armatage gets national love from a top food magazine

Food & Wine magazine has called out both the local Punch Pizza chain and Pizzeria Lola in south Minneapolis's Armatage neighborhood as two of the 50 best pizza joints in the U.S. It probably didn't hurt that Andrew Zimmern is one of the magazine's contributing editors, but he surely isn't the only well-traveled foodie who thinks the Twin Cities' boutique pizzerias are among the best in the country. Punch pizza came in at a very impressive No. 15 in the magazine's rankings. Zimmern calls the Punch an "insanely good Neapolitan pizzeria" and proclaims it one of his top five best pizza spots in the country.

Lola came in at the No. 45 spot in the nation. In an earlier Food & Wine piece about Pizzeria Lola, Zimmern writes, "Yes, it's true, Minnesota has the best pizza in America. Let the debate begin! Better than NYC and Chicago put together."

Zimmern has previously been outspoken about the quality of pie Pizzeria Lola offers. He even made a guest cameo on Guy Fieri's Diner's, Drive-ins and Dives in which he convinced the egg-hating host to give Lola's Sunnyside pizza [also the pie featured in the F&W article] a try.

Pizzeria Lola offers many classic pizza varieties but also features several signature items that have become staples among Twin Cities diners. The Sunnyside features La Quercia guanciale, pecorino, cream, leeks, and two organic eggs sunnyside up. The Boise features potato, gruyere and fontina cheese, caramelized onions, olive oil, and rosemary. You can also find some of chef-owner Anna Kim's Asian-inspired recipes like the Lady ZaZa, which features Kim's housemade kim chee (which is amazing), Korean sausage, serrano peppers, scallions, sesame, and  soy chili glaze, or their Korean BBQ pizza, which includes Grass Run Farm beef short ribs, mozzarella, scallions, arugula, sesame, and soy-chile vinaigrette.
