October arrives filled with fests this Week in Food
Oktoberfest means sausage at the Black Forest Inn on Monday
Oooh October. The first of the month ushers in a month of great eating: pumpkin beers, end-of-season bounties (squash!), and all the candy your cavities can handle. Ease yourself in with a week of fun fall events.
10/1 The first day of October has us thinking about one thing: Oktoberfest at the Black Forest Inn. Today is day four of the 10-day fest, which is all about sausages and all the accoutrements that goes along with them (mustard, relish, sauerkraut!). Dive into a brat bar filled with everything from weisswurst to handmade chicken curry sausage for just $15 from 5 to 10 p.m., and be sure to get yourself a Grain Belt in order to land a free logo pint glass while supplies last. FYI, if you BYO tuba you get a free beer! The festivities run through Sunday, October 7.
10/4 The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum continues 4x4 Culinary Minnesota Wine Series with Wise Acre Eatery tonight. Chefs Beth Fisher and Caroline Glawe will pair their culinary expertise with the following Minnesota wines: Sovereign Estate Wine's Talon Crest; Glacial Ridge Winery's Castle Rock; Chankaska Creek Ranch & Winery's Late Harvest; and Cannon River Winery's Rosella. This demo/meal/tasting class costs $50 for members, $60 for nonmembers and runs 6:30-8:30 p.m. To reserve a spot call 952.443.1422.
10/5 More Oktoberfest! This time it's at the State Fair grounds, where the Twin Cities Oktoberfest offers two days of beer, brats, and all things German at the Progress Center. Enjoy live music, traditional German food, loads of Summit Oktoberfest beer, and authentic dance. If you have a favorite beer stein be sure to bring it along and they will gladly let you use it! Don't have one? You're in the right place -- with each paid admission you will get to use (and keep!) a 24-ounce ceramic mug. Entrance costs $25 and Friday night's festivities run from 4 to 11 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 11 p.m.
10/6 If there's ever a month to brush up on your chocolate and candymaking skills, October is it. Today's seminar at Kitchen Window, Candy & Chocolate Basics, promises to get you up to speed on the fundamental techniques for handmade candies and chocolates. You'll learn how to make chocolate truffles, caramels, molded chocolate candies, and even lollipops. You'll also get the basics about choosing the right ingredients, the importance of temperature when working with chocolate, and adding unique flavors to your treats. The class costs $30 and runs from 1 to 3 p.m.
10/7 The Minnesota Historical Society's Oliver H. Kelley Farm invites visitors to make "prairie sugar," also known as sorghum molasses. Help strip the leaves from sorghum canes, press the canes, via a horse-powered press to withdraw the juice, and stir the juice to a boil as it forms into syrupy molasses. The result? A sweet molasses treat like gingerbread and molasses candy. The farm is open from 12 to 5 p.m., and entry costs $9 for adults, $7 for children ages 6-17.
