Who are the leaders of the Twin Cities local and sustainable food movement? Think any of them deserve $10,000? The not-for-profit environmental organization National Resources Defense Council is seeking nominations for its second annual "Growing Green" awards in four categories: Food Producer, Business Leader, Thought Leader, and Water Steward. The site says:
Through this national award, NRDC will recognize extraordinary contributions that advance ecologically integrated farming practices, climate stewardship, water stewardship, farmland preservation, and social responsibility from farm to fork.
It's kinda cool to see an organization historically tethered to more traditional environmental issues expand its mission and heighten a recognition of the role of food in the health of the environment.
Last year's winners were Will Allen of Growing Power, Fedele Bauccio of Bon Appétit Management Company and James Harvie of Institute for a Sustainable Future, in the categories of Food Producer, Business Leader and Thought Leader. This year's panel of judges includes Michael Pollan and Nora PouiIlon, owner of the country's first certified-organic eatery, D.C.'s Restaurant Nora.
Nominations are due Dec. 4.
