More seasonals coming soon from Northgate Brewing
Now that its Wall's End Brown is pouring at Grumpy's in Northeast and their license has officially been approved by the Minneapolis City Council, Northgate Brewing is looking toward a promising future. The Northeast Minneapolis brewery is preparing to release its first round of seasonal beers at the sold-out Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild's Winterfest on February 1.
Owners Adam Sjogren, Todd Slininger, and head brewer Tuck Carruthers say they will take their stylistic cues mostly from the traditional beers of the British Isles, but they still seem keen to cater to the local bent toward hoppier brews.
Here are more details on the upcoming seasonals from Northgate:
Maggie's Leap is a take on a traditional English Sweet Stout, a favorite beer style of Northgate's head brewer. With sparse hopping and the addition of lactose, this 4.8% ABV brew has creamy sweetness and body that perfectly complement the beer's roasted malt and coffee notes.
The OGW wheat beer, brewed with orange peel and ginger, was created with the beginning of summer in mind, but Northgate says they want to make it available much sooner in the hopes that it will provide a respite from winter's doldrums. The orange and ginger notes in this 4.9% ABV brew are muted so as to complement the character that comes with wheat beer rather than overpower it.
Northgate's Winter Warmer may technically be an Old Ale by style, but this harder-hitting, malt-forward beer was brewed to enjoy fresh. At 7.7% ABV, the winter warmer does the job it was designed for without sacrificing complexity.
is Northgate's hoppiest offering so far, but at 38 IBU it's far from the Hopslams and Hop Stoopids of the beer world (both of which are up around 100 IBU). But the spicy and earthy English hops do come through in Northgate's take on a traditional English Bitter.
